photoThe Archpriest Paul O'Callaghan was appointed Dean of St. George Cathedral January 1, 1993. Formerly the pastor of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in San Diego, CA, Fr. Paul was assigned to St. George Cathedral upon the elevation of our former pastor, (then Archimandrite) Basil Essey, to the episcopate in May of 1992.

A native Californian, Fr. Paul was born in 1954 in San Francisco and raised in nearby Marin County. His upbringing was solidly Roman Catholic; he attended both primary and secondary Catholic schools and graduated from Marin Catholic High School in 1972. Becoming disaffected with Roman Catholicism at first because of liturgical changes, Fr. Paul investigated Christian history and traditions with a view to understanding the authentic Christian liturgical ethos and the development of the historic faith. This study led him to the conclusion that where Roman Catholicism differed from Eastern Orthodoxy, Orthodoxy had in fact preserved the authentic tradition. He entered the Orthodox Church in 1976 at St. Nicholas Antiochian Church in San Francisco, while in the process of finishing his undergraduate degree in Religious Studies at California State University, in Chico, CA.

In 1977, Fr. Paul was blessed by Metropolitan PHILIP of the Antiochian Archdiocese to begin theological study at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. He was ordained by Metropolitan PHILIP to the Diaconate and Priesthood in January and May of 1979, respectively, and then assigned as interim pastor of St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA in August of that year. After receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Holy Cross in the spring of 1980, he was assigned to the assistant pastorate of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral, Los Angeles that August. He remained in that position until being transferred to the pastorate of St. George, San Diego, on January 1, 1984. In October 1990, he was elevated to the rank of archpriest. After the consecration of Bp. BASIL, Fr. Paul was asked by Metropolitan PHILIP to assume the position of Dean at St. George Cathedral here in Wichita.

Fr. Paul and his Khourieh, Jeannie (Linane) were married in 1978. They have four children: Leah (b. 1979), Sean, (b.1982), Paul and Christine (b. 1986). Fr. Paul has published one small book (An Eastern Orthodox Response to Evangelical Claims) and a number of articles. Fr. Paul was the primary commentator on the Book of Revelation for the Orthodox Study Bible.
