WHAT'S
OCF?
The
mission of Orthodox Christian Fellowship is to support fellowships on college
campuses nationwide through prayer, service not only to our church community
but the community at large, and the study of Faith. Here in Wichita our OCF is
comprised of students from Wichita State, Friends, and Newman University. We
meet every Tuesday night at 6:45 for vespers followed by an evening of
discussion. The college years can get tough and having a group you can count on
for support is a great comfort. By joining with others who are experiencing
many of the same situations, these evenings become a welcome retreat from the
chaos of college life.
Aside
from our weekly discussions, there are events that all OCF chapters are
encouraged to participate in. In December there are two college conferences
that are offered for all OCF nation-wide. St. Nicholas Ranch in Dunlap, CA
holds the conference for the West Coast and the Antiochian Village continues to
host the East Coast in Bolivar, PA. These conferences offer seminars, dances,
worship services, and social events for everyone who comes. They are truly
inspirational and enlightening and prepare you to go back to campus ready for
second semester.
Offered
during spring break, "Real Break" has also been a growing activity
for OCF to participate in. It is called "Real Break" because that is
exactly what you get--a real break from college and hectic schedules. E! and MTV
would have you think that getting intoxicated and having a "good
time" is what spring break is all about. Instead, the college student
comes back feeling more exhausted and spiritually dead then when he or she
left. On Real Break trips there is humanitarian work going on as well as
interaction with Christ and our brothers and sisters in Christ. A real peace of
mind, body, and soul comes about from doing this work and you come back alive
and well rested. "Real Break" offers trips to the Orthodox orphanages
of Guatemala and Tijuana, Mexico, the Raphael House in San Francisco and
occasional Habitat for Humanity projects that are in the local area.
On
campus we support each other by attending one another's activities such as band
and orchestra concerts, basketball games, etc. When we're able, we try to
participate in activities where we can show our faith. This can include setting
up information booths to make our presence known and participating in
campus-wide service projects. It is our hope to not only grow as a chapter, but
to become more prevalent at our universities.
